Rolex – a currency?

It is claimed that no matter where you are in the world, you can exchange your Rolex for water, food or other basic needs. The brand is so iconic that it has almost become its own currency. However, how does that happen? Below we explore the story behind perhaps the world's most prominent brand.

A lively 118-year-old

Despite its age, Rolex is young in the watch world. Most watch competitors were founded in the mid-19th century, while Rolex itself did not begin operations until 1905, in London, England. Founder Hans Wilsdorf had a vision for the brand to be pioneering and youthful, both when it came to technical capabilities and marketing. They were quick to attach watches on the wrists of adventurous individuals, including Mercedes Gleitze, the first woman to swim across the English Channel with a Rolex on her wrist.

A few years later, they moved the business from London and opened their first office in Switzerland. Subsequently, Rolex received the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, marking the company's first major success.

In the following decade, Wilsdorf and Rolex devoted themselves to solving the problem of dust and water resistance, which led to a ground-breaking invention in 1926 – the Oyster watch. This design was inspired by the strong and durable shell of the oyster. This was a ground-breaking innovation in the watch industry. Not only was this watch water resistant but it was also designed to be shock resistant and dust resistant, making it ideal for use in extreme environments. The Oyster model also distinguished itself as the very first watch that could be worn underwater with no risk of damage. The introduction of the Oyster transformed Rolex into a brand and cemented its position as one of the most innovative watchmakers, a legacy that would continue for over five decades.

Just five years after Oyster's debut, Hans Wilsdorf realised a lifelong dream by creating a self-winding watch that would later become known as the Oyster Perpetual.

The Submariner, Datejust and Daytona models

• Rolex Submariner: The watch of watches. Undoubtedly, one of the most copied watch designs of all time is the Submariner with a black dial, rotating bezel and waterproof case. Expect to have to wait for many years before you have the opportunity to own one of your own. Unless you choose to buy used, that is.
